Latest project: This year, 40 years after 1968, I've been thinking a lot about what happened then. It was the first year of my adult life, when I began working at the Washington Post. Living in Washington, events swirled around me. It was riots, assassinations, war, a wild election campaign, a stressed economy, music, film, art and hippies. It was a year very like this one.

I've been posting my memories to the Behind the News blog, under the category '1968', approximately at the time they happened. You can read them all by clicking on that link. Scroll to the bottom to start from the beginning. I'll post the whole thing as a chronological file when it's all done.

The "Infomaniac" title comes from a 1994 article about a new kind of news researcher by John Ullman in The Database Files newsletter. They named me Infomaniac of the Year that year.

As a true infomaniac my first love is research. My news research blog, since November 2000, is called Behind the News (Blogger version since August 2002). For several years I did a blog at The Miami Herald: if they still exist they were at

Now after 30 some years as a news researcher, at the Miami Herald and Washington Post, I'm retired but keeping up the research and the blog and links lists, but am also taking photos of the Southern Appalachian area where I live now, and posting them to a mountain photos Weblog, Southern Highlands Cam.

For years I've maintained a list of my favorite blog sites, aside from the Blogrolls on my two blogs, and a list of sites from the Southern Appalachians, where I live now. The blog list is posted below and was completely updated when it moved here 2/12/08. The Appalachian links also updated, and most of the reference links in the left column.

Last Addition 7/8/08.
